Legal text classification in Korean sexual offense cases: from traditional machine learning to large language models with XAI insights
AI InsightIn the legal classification study of Korean sexual offense cases, the fine-tuned KLUE-BERT achieved a 99.3% accuracy, outperforming GPT-3.5 and GPT-4.0. This indicates that domain adaptation and fine-tuning in highly complex legal verticals hold greater practical value than relying solely on general-purpose large language models.Key TakeawayAI applications in legal verticals are shifting from blind reliance on general-purpose LLMs to cost-effective specialized model fine-tuning.Why It MattersLegal scenarios demand extremely high classification accuracy and complex text comprehension. This study proves that small fine-tuned models can reduce compute costs while achieving higher accuracy in vertical domains, offering a more economical path for legal tech commercialization.Who's Affected- BeneficiaryLegal Tech EnterprisesFine-tuning small specialized models reduces inference costs while maintaining high accuracy, improving commercial viability.
- At RiskGeneral-Purpose LLM ProvidersDemonstrates that un-fine-tuned general models may underperform compared to domain-adapted small models in specialized verticals.
What's NextFuture observations should focus on the generalization capabilities of such legal fine-tuned models in actual judicial or law firm settings, alongside the practical improvements of XAI mechanisms on decision transparency.Importance 68/100
